    Automatic Drain Valves
Dehydra52 drain valve Drain valves remove sludge and liquid from compressed air systems. Automatic drain valves should be installed at each liquid collection point in a compressed air system, including:
  • Aftercooler/Separators
  • Air receivers
  • Coalescers (pre-filter)
  • Refrigerated dryer blow-down
  • Drip legs
Removing water and sludge with an automatic drain valve helps your compressed air system run more efficiently reducing your utility cost.

    Air Receivers
air receiverIPS can work with you to select the right receiver and have it manufactured to your specifications at practically any size in diameters manufacturing air receiversfrom two inches to 12 feet. A large line of stock air receivers and custom air receivers with special fixturing, internal weldments, and tight tolerances are available. Both coded and non-coded tanks are available. IPS will work with you to meet any special local codes. In general at a minimum, local codes require air receivers to be ASME coded vessels.

    Aftercoolers
Aftercoolers can cool compressed air flows from 35 to 4,000 scfm to within 10°F approach of the ambient air temperature for air-to-air exchangers and 10°F approach of inlet air temperature for shell-and-tube exchangers. PPC's aftercoolers are rated to 400°F and 250 psig with a maximum pressure drop of 3 psi. Used with an oil/water separator and an automatic drain valve an aftercooler will remove up to 90 percent of the water in a compressed air system.

    Mechanical Separators
Pneumatic Products' PSS Separators remove 90% of entrained water from compressed air when used in conjunction with an aftercooler. Mechanical Separators use centrifugal and direct interception methods to capture the entrained liquid from the compressed air stream. Features of PPC's PSS Separators include:
  • High efficiency design provides removal of large particulate and water droplets under most process conditions
  • Large drain port helps prevent blockage
  • Low pressure drop delivers economical operation

    Mist Eliminators

    Sentry Mist Eliminators
Problem: Compressed air system coalescing and particulate filters cannot handle excessive water and oil loads. It is common for the amount of moisture exiting the aftercooler to exceed 200 PPMw. Most traditional coalescing filters are not efficient when challenged with loads greater than 20 PPMw.

Solution: Sentry Mist Eliminators can easily handle 200 PPMw. Actually, the Sentry Mist Eliminator can remove 99.5% of all liquid loads up to 30,000 PPMw.

How it Works: The thick packed-bed filter design continuously drains itself as liquids coalesce, quietly dropping to the sump for draining. Face velocities are extremely low virtually eliminating the possibility of liquid re-entrainment.

    Benefits
  • Particulate Removal - Removes 100% of all particles 3µm and greater. 99.5% removal efficiency of all particles down to 0.1µm. The Sentry Mist Eliminator has an unparalleled ability to remove both particulate and liquid from compressed air streams.
  • Low Pressure Drop - Sentry Mist Eliminators have pressure drops of less than 1 PSID, often for more than 10 years. Sentry mist eliminators can last 10 to 20 times longer than conventional cartridge filters.
  • Low Operating Cost - Using a conservative assumption that Sentry Mist Eliminators will reduce pressure drop 3 PSID as compared to conventional cartridge filters, a 1.5% efficiency gain can be achieved. For a typical 5,000 SCFM system, energy savings can easily exceed $6,000 per year and more, depending on the cost of energy.

    Oil/Water Separators
Carryover oil from oil-lubricated compressors exits the compressed air system with the condensate produced at aftercooler/separators, wet air receivers, coalescing filters and refrigerated air dryers. The EPA has found oil latent condensate is unsafe to discharge to surface waters, sanitary sewers, or waste treatment facilities. Oil is only a small portion of the condensate. By using an oil/water separator you can remove oil from condensate allowing the discharge of the water portion by conventional means. The oil still needs to be properly disposed of, but at a much lower cost than the original large volume of oil and water condensate.

    Desiccant

    Desiccant overview
    Activated alumina
    Silica gel
    Molecular sieve

    Desiccant
Desiccant adsorbs moisture from gas through a chemical reaction. Different desiccant adsorb more than othersActivated Alumina Beads based on process conditions. For example activated alumina is an excellent moisture adsorber when the relative humidity is 100%. It can adsorb up to 40% its weight at 100% relative humidity. However its efficiency declines as the relative humidity falls. The most common desiccant types used to dry compressed air are...
  • Activated alumina - excellent all purpose desiccant for drying air and most other gases with high relative humidities
  • Silica gel - very effective desiccant for drying compressed air/gas streams, especially natural gas. Features excellent adsorption at mid inlet relative humidity
  • Molecular sieve - most effective for applications with low inlet flows and low relative humidities, (Less than 30-35%RH). Can achieve the lowst dewpoints possible to -120°F

There are various grades of each type and they are available in a large variety of shapes and sizes. IPS has vast experience selecting desiccant to cost-effectively dry gas streams and can help you find the best drying solution. Contact us at 215-675-8670 or email us to discuss an optimized desiccant solution for your application.

    Activated Alumina
Activated alumina is an excellent all purpose desiccant for drying air and most other gases with high relative humidities. Dewpoints of -100°F can be achieved (depending on dryer). Activated alumina can be used in both heated and heatless / pressure swing dryers.Activated Alumina Beads

Activated alumina has: excellent porosity creating tortuous paths and extended surface area; high strength against crushing; and very stable physical and chemical characteristics, even in high temperature and corrosive environments.
    Activated Alumina
  • -100°F dew points obtainable
  • Unaffected by catastrophic liquid water loading
  • Ideal for both heatless and heat regenerated systems
  • Low regeneration temperature 250°F to 500°F

    Silica Gel
Silica gel is a very effective desiccant for drying air and often used to dry natural gas. Silica gel has excellent static adsorption at mid inlet relative humidity. White Silica Gel BeadsDue to its uniform bead size and high bulk density silica gel beads minimize nesting and channeling within the dryer. Large volume drying applications use silica gel because it offers premium drying performance and an energy cost savings compared to other desiccant.

Silica gel is odorless, non-toxic, and non-corrosive, with stable chemical and thermal characteristics.Silica Gel Beads Interconnected pores form a vast surface area, silica gel can adsorb moisture 40% or up of its weight at 100% humidity.
    Silica Gel Features
  • -80°F dew points obtainable
  • Susceptible to liquid and thermal fracture; recommend using an activated alumina pre-buffer
  • Most common on heat regenerated systems
  • Low regeneration temperatures, 250°F to 500°F

    Molecular Sieve
Molecular sieve is most effective for applications with low inlet flows and low relative humidities, (Less than 30-35%RH). A common molecular sieve application is working as a polishing layer to achieve dew points down to -120°F, and in applications for drying hydrocarbons and other exotic gases.Molecular Sieve Beads

Molecular Sieve is a combination of optimized desiccant materials including: sodium potassium and calcium alumina silicate. The actual combination and materials varies depending on the product. IPS offers a wide selection of molecular sieve to meet the requirements of different drying applications. Molecular sieve is non-toxic and insoluble to water and most organic solvents. Because molecular sieve can provide the lowest possible dewpoints it is used in the most demanding and unique drying applications.
    Molecular Sieve
  • Regeneration temperatures, 350°F to 700°F
  • Dewpoints to -120°F
  • Recommended for polishing applications and unique demanding drying applications
